Hinson Co-Leads Effort to Fix Loophole in Family Leave Policy

June 14, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (IA-01) recently joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers to introduce the FAIR Leave Act. Currently, a loophole in federal law limits the amount of family leave some married people can take if they work for the same employer. The bill amends federal family leave policy to allow married couples working for the same employer to take the same amount of leave as couples working for different employers.

"An unfair loophole currently prevents some married couples from taking the full amount of family leave they would be able to use if they worked for different employers. This common sense solution will help ensure that workers can take their full leave, regardless of if they work for the same employer. I'll continue to work across the aisle to help working families in Iowa access the resources they need to take care of their loved ones while still participating in the workforce." - Congresswoman Ashley Hinson

This legislation was introduced alongside Representative Katie Porter (CA-45) and is co-led by Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), Andy Levin (MI-09), John Katko (NY-24), and Haley Stevens (MI-11).
