Hinson Votes to Ensure Illegal Immigrants Aren't Included in Congressional District Apportionment
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (R-IA-02) released the following statement after the House passed the Equal Representation Act. This bill requires the decennial census to include a citizenship question, and excludes noncitizens from the population on which the apportionment of U.S. House Representatives and electors for each state is based. Hinson is a cosponsor of this legislation.
"Reinstating the citizenship question on the decennial census will ensure sanctuary states like California and New York are not rewarded for allowing illegal immigrants into their communities. This legislation will guarantee that only American citizens - not illegal immigrants - are considered for federal representation, Electoral College votes, and funding opportunities." - Congresswoman Ashley Hinson
Background:
The Equal Representation Act would:
- Mandate that the Census Bureau reinstate the citizenship question on the decennial census
- Only allow United States citizens to count toward determining the number of congressional seats, which also affects Electoral College votes in presidential elections
- Require public reporting of all information gathered from the citizenship question by state no later than 120 days after completion of the decennial census
