1st District Democrats invite GOP Rep. Hinson to quarterly meeting, Hinson accepts offer
Call it a political cease fire in local Congressional Politics. 1st District Congresswoman Ashley Hinson addressed the Iowa First District Democrats' quarterly meeting on Sunday. The meeting, held virtually, featured statements from top Iowa Democrats including new Chairman and State Representative Ross Wilburn, and Iowa's only Democrat in Congress, Rep. Cindy Axne.
"We made the unprecedented decision to extend an invitation to our First Congressional District Representative, Congresswoman Ashley Hinson." The group said in a statement. "She accepted our invitation and will be providing us with a legislative update. We feel strongly that establishing a relationship with our Representative in the US Congress is critical, especially during these times of extended stress and uncertainty."
Congresswoman Hinson released a statement after taking part in the event. "I represent everyone in Iowa's First Congressional District, not just those who supported me, and it is important for me to be accessible to all of my constituents. Too often we don't engage with people we disagree with on politics or policy, and I think that is a major reason why our civil discourse has become so heated and divisive. While we may have significant differences of opinion on many issues, there is a lot we can unite on as Iowans and Americans."
Leaders of the group, who will undoubtedly support Rep. Hinson's future challenger signaled their hope for improved bipartisanship whenever possible. "We are hopeful this will be the beginning of a meaningful dialogue, one which will allow for civil discourse and engagement." Although there was no question-and-answer period planned or asked for, organizers say they are considering making that offer in the future.
