Hinson, Colleagues Introduce Bipartisan Legislation to Strengthen Food Supply Chain

May 12, 2022

The Strengthening the Agriculture and Food Supply Chain Act would create a task force dedicated to shoring up the agriculture and food supply chains to prevent bottlenecks and lower food costs

Washington, D.C. - Representative Ashley Hinson (R-IA) helped introduce the bipartisan Strengthening the Agriculture and Food Supply Chain Act alongside Representatives Angie Craig (D-MN), Dusty Johnson (R-SD), Cindy Axne (D-IA), Cheri Bustos (D-IL), and Randy Feenstra (R-IA). This legislation would create a dedicated task force to shore up the American food supply chain to bring prices down and prevent future shortages of essential items.

“The current supply chain breakdown has raised costs on working families at the grocery store and increased input prices for farmers. It has also led to shortages of food and other essential items," said Representative Ashley Hinson. "Our bipartisan legislation will ensure the United States has a long-term strategy to build resilient, domestic food supply chains and provide much needed certainty for working families and farmers."

“Right now, Americans are justifiably frustrated by the higher prices they’re experiencing – whether that’s families checking out at the grocery store or farmers and business owners struggling with higher input costs,”said Representative Angie Craig.“In Congress, we must take immediate action to get products from ships to shelves faster – and to rebuild and strengthen our supply chains for future generations. I’m proud to lead my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in introducing this commonsense legislation to stabilize and strengthen America’s supply chains.”

“Over the past few years Americans have faced supply chain shortages of all kinds – from meat to baby formula to toilet paper – the lack of stability is out of control,” said Representative Dusty Johnson.“There are cracks in our supply chain – our bill will get to the bottom of these issues and put a plan in place to fix the problems. Food security is national security.”

“As we see continued disruptions to our nation’s supply chains, Iowans are seeing rising prices from the gas pump to the grocery store,” said Representative Cindy Axne.“Our food supply chain faces risks from fertilizer to railroads, and protecting it from those risks is a top priority. This legislation will not only help create better food security, but will help drive down prices for everyone.”

“As Putin’s war in Ukraine and domestic supply chain issues continue to raise food prices, families are feeling the pinch. It’s essential that we take action to shore up our supply chains and reduce costs at the grocery store,” said Representative Cheri Bustos. That’s why I’m proud to join Congresswoman Angie Craig to introduce bipartisan legislation creating a task force at the U.S. Department of Agriculture focused on stabilizing our food supply chains and reducing costs for consumers.”

“Iowans are feeling the pain of inflation every time they go to the grocery store and the gas station, and our broken supply chain is only making matters worse,”
said Representative Randy Feenstra.“By identifying and eliminating pinch points in our supply chain, we can lower the cost of groceries and other household goods for Iowa families and our rural communities. I am proud to co-lead this bipartisan legislation with my Midwestern colleagues to strengthen our domestic supply chains and ensure that Iowans can buy the items they need at reasonable prices.”
