Hinson Continues to Champion Rural Maternal Care

February 13, 2024

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA-02) is continuing her efforts to improve maternal care for rural women as they grow their families.

Last week, she visited the MercyOne New Hampton Medical Center and the Waverly Health Center to discuss improving rural maternal health care. Additionally, she sat down with a group of Iowa women who experienced high-risk pregnancies and endured the tragedy of stillbirth to hear their stories first-hand.

"When I came to Congress, I set out to ensure those who live in rural areas have the same access to healthcare that those in urban areas do, especially expecting moms. Last week, I spent time meeting with the healthcare providers who are on the frontlines of ensuring every woman has access to quality care, as well as women who are lending their voices to the fight for improved services and resources on the journey to motherhood. I’m proud of my work to expand maternal healthcare and make motherhood easier, including introducing legislation to bring more midwives to Iowa, raise awareness about stillbirth prevention, and ensure new moms don’t receive surprise hospital bills. We will work together for healthy moms, healthy babies, and strong families in Iowa." – Congresswoman Ashley Hinson

Hinson met with the team at MercyOne New Hampton to hear about their work to provide patients with prenatal and postnatal care.

Hinson discussed the labor and delivery services provided by the team at Waverly Health Center, a Critical Access Hospital in Bremer County.

Hinson met with women who have endured high risk pregnancy and the tragedy of stillbirth in Grundy County.

Background:
Hinson has led several pieces of bipartisan legislation to expand maternal health care access, especially in rural areas, and end the tragedy of stillbirth.
  • The Midwives for Moms Act: Increases the number of trained midwives in the United States to fill gaps in maternity care and improve birth outcomes.
  • No Surprise Bills for New Moms Act: Prevents new parents from receiving surprise medical bills for their newborn babies.
  • Maternal and Child Health Stillbirth Prevention Act: Prevents the all too frequent, but often silent, tragedy of stillbirth by clarifying the Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant of the Social Security Act to include stillbirth prevention activities and research as an allowable use of funds.
