Hinson, Craig Urge EPA to Support Increased Biofuels Volumes

July 10, 2024

Washington, DC - Congresswomen Ashley Hinson (IA-02) and Angie Craig (MN-02) led 35 House lawmakers in a letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Regan urging the agency to raise Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) volumes for advanced biofuels to account for increased production and availability. Read the full letter here.

"The EPA continues to undermine the RFS, going back on promises from President Biden to support biofuels producers, and inflicting significant damage to the biofuels industry. I will continue calling on the EPA to increase blending requirements and expand the use of biofuels to support domestic energy production and our rural economy." - Congresswoman Ashley Hinson

Background:
The letter follows numerous efforts by Hinson to push for higher volumes for biofuels. In 2023, Reps. Hinson and Craig led a bipartisan letter urging the EPA to increase volumes for biomass-based diesel and advanced biofuels. While the EPA provided a small increase in these volumes, the levels set by the Agency failed to account for existing production capacity.

The Energy Information Administration noted that the volumes set by EPA for 2023 - 2025 were set “significantly lower than production trends.” This caused prices for these products to drop by over 70% and led to the closure of several Midwestern biofuel plants, including plants in Ralston, Iowa, and Madison, Wisconsin.
