Hinson Joins Amicus Brief to Defend Law Abiding Gun Owners from Unconstitutional ATF Overreach

November 30, 2023

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (IA-02) joined Senators Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and a group of bicameral lawmakers in an amicus brief to uphold the Second Amendment. The amicus brief follows a court ruling allowing the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to reclassify pistols with stabilizing braces, a mechanism often used by disabled veterans, as short-barreled rifles. This rule change was not approved by Congress and would potentially turn law abiding gun owners into criminals for exercising their Second Amendment rights.

"The Second Amendment isn't a suggestion, it is a Constitutional right that must be upheld. The ATF's overreach impacts millions of gun owners across the country, particularly disabled veterans, and unravels over a decade of legal precedent. While those on the Left continue to push gun control measures that demonize gun owners, and even turn law abiding citizens into felons, I’ll continue defending Iowans' right to keep and bear arms." - Congresswoman Ashley Hinson

Hinson recently penned an opinion piece arguing against the ATF's unconstitutional rule. Read it here.
