Hinson Statement on Government Funding

March 22, 2024

WASHINGTON – Rep. Ashley Hinson (IA-02) released the following statement on the government funding package.

"Congress should not be finalizing last year’s appropriations bills six months into this fiscal year, and I share Iowans’ frustration with the shutdown politics. This funding package slashes Biden's army of IRS agents and deals a blow to Biden's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion agenda while also funding a well deserved pay raise for our troops and supporting our Border Patrol Agents. While there are conservative wins and important cuts in this bill, we must go further, cut more, and defund the Biden Administration's liberal  agenda. We will do so when we have Republican control of the White House and Senate."  Congresswoman Ashley Hinson

Background:

The government funding package makes the following cuts to reckless government spending:

  • Cuts State and foreign operations overall spending by 6% and holds the United Nations accountable for bias against our allies.
  • Cuts $50.5 million from Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs and cuts $574 million from wasteful climate change programs.
  • Slashes funding for Biden Administration’s army of IRS agents that are set on going after hardworking Americans.
Many of Hinson's priorities were included in the bill:
  • Supports 22,000 Border Patrol Agents, the highest level ever funded, and provides critical overtime pay for them.
  • Includes funding for the FEMA Next Generation Warning System, which improves resiliency for emergency communications during severe weather.
  • Supports FEMA Flood Hazard Mapping and Risk Analysis Program, which helps increase safety for flood-prone communities and allow homeowners and small businesses to understand flood risks.
  • Maintains the Hyde Amendment to ensure no federal funds can be used for abortions.
  • Includes the Dickey Amendment, ensuring that federal funds cannot be used to advocate for, or promote, gun control.
  • Includes Hinson's initiative to track and replace Chinese telecommunications equipment installed in federal buildings.
Rep. Hinson's final Community Project Funding request was included in this package:
  • $8,000,000 for Dubuque Flood Mitigation Gates and Pumps (Dubuque County) to support the City of Dubuque’s disaster mitigation efforts, which are crucial to the Mississippi River community’s safety and security. This flood mitigation project will work in tandem with the recently completed Bee Branch Creek Restoration and Culverts Projects to prevent flood damage to the city’s most at-risk neighborhoods and businesses.
