Hinson Works to Combat Anti-Semitic Mobs on College Campuses

May 1, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (R-IA-02) released the following statement on her vote to support the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act and denounce the violent, anti-Semitic riots on college campuses across the country.

The anti-Semitism on full display at college campuses is abhorrent. As a former journalist, I believe in protecting free speech, but I don’t believe in protecting hate speech. Calling for the genocide of Jews is hate speech, and I can’t fathom why many university leaders are so spineless in their refusal to condemn anti-Semitism and shut down these violent mobs. By passing legislation like the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, we are sending a strong message that we stand with Jewish students and the Jewish community around the globe. While some Democrats like AOC and Ilhan Omar have egged these rioters on, I will continue to lead with moral clarity to defeat anti-Semitism."  - Congresswoman Ashley Hinson

Background:

The Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023 requires the Department of Education to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's (IHRA) definition of anti-semitism. This will provide a consistent basis for the Department of Education, schools, colleges, and universities to police antisemitic discrimination and harassment.
