Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Ashley Hinson joined Washington Post Live with Marianna Sotomayor to discuss improving child care access for working families, pro-growth economic policy, and how her perspective as a working mom makes her a better legislator. Key highlights of the conversation are below.
On pro-growth economic policies and workforce: "So, I want to focus on Main Street, kitchen table conversations that I have been hearing about. Let’s focus on that tax policy and make sure that our small business tax cuts are permanent so they can have that certainty they need to invest in their businesses long term. We need to be focusing on getting people back to work. What is keeping them from getting into the workforce? The dignity of work—how can we help our employers to create more jobs but also create more of a work culture that will get people interested in coming back to work."
On energy costs driving inflation:"[Gas prices] are top of mind for most of my constituents right now. Whether you are a small business trying to fill up your trucks or sheriffs—their budgets are crippled by these gas price increases. Or an Iowan in rural America where you are driving 40-50 miles a day to get to work and back. That is a huge strain on budgets."
On child care: "My boys are 9 and 11, I remember what that felt like—dropping them off at a child care center and trusting them to take care of my babies while I was off working. But, I think we need to make sure that those regulations are specific to safety, and not onerous because all that does is drive up cost...but let's talk about the impact of inflation on this business as well. The food costs for feeding our kids have gone up. The utilities cost for running these buildings and centers have gone up significantly, as well as labor costs. We need to do everything we can to drive those down and drive down bottom line costs, because that's how you end up providing more access."
On the Republican vision for America: "Do you want the government out of your life? Do you want more regulation out of your life? Do you want to be able to have lower taxes and keep more of your hard-earned money? Those are some basic tenets that we are continuing to support policies around. The budget that President Biden’s Administration just proposed does nothing to protect tax cuts for our small businesses and working families. We will continue to focus on those pro-growth, pro-worker, pro-family policies that will help our country be successful in the long run."
