"As 2023 comes to an end, I’m reflecting on all we have accomplished, together, for Iowans.
I’ve been to all 22 counties in Iowa’s Second Congressional District at least four times this year, meeting with families, veterans, small businesses, and farmers to hear about their challenges and their successes, and learn how I can help.
Transparency and accountability are at the heart of what I do, which is why I’ve held 14 in person town halls and 8 virtual town halls this year to hear directly from you.
I’ve turned that feedback into action and introduced legislation like the:
- After Hours Child Care Act, to expand childcare services beyond 9 to 5 hours to fit real family schedules
- The Maternal and Child Health Stillbirth Prevention Act, to help end tragedy of stillbirth, the tragic loss of a child after 20 weeks, and ensure expecting women have access to care
- The EATS Act to stand up for Iowa pig farmers and overturn California’s Prop 12 bacon ban
- And the REAL Trucking Act, to get more Iowa truckers on the road and reduce costs across the board.
I have also kept up my important work of improving quality of life for Iowa veterans, elevating the conversation around veterans’ mental health care and engaging TSA to help veterans with service dogs travel more easily.
While many of my efforts in Congress are bipartisan, I have also held the Biden Administration accountable and pushed back on policies that are just plain wrong – from rejecting Biden’s student loan “cancelation” scheme, to standing firm against wasteful spending, and working to secure our Southern Border.
As a Member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ve been dedicated to slashing reckless spending while delivering investments for our district, including a $1.5 million grant for Dubuque to help restore daily commercial air service.
And, we can be honest, there was a whole lot of chaos and dysfunction in Washington in 2023, which is why I redoubled my efforts to drain the swamp through my Make Washington Work Again package, which would force bureaucrats who have been “working from home” back into the office, move agency headquarters out of DC, and enact a federal lobbying ban.
Our team closed 3,481 constituent cases this year – helping Iowans get back money they are owed by the IRS, collecting missing social security and veterans benefits, bringing Iowans home safely from Israel, and reuniting families by securing passports.
We’ve responded to over 28,000 constituents who have written in to our team, and we are going to keep these conversations going in the new year.
I’ve approached this year with one mission: make D.C. run more like Iowa and enact policies that connect rural communities, improve safety and security for Iowa families, and protect taxpayers – because it is your money, not the government’s money.
I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together in 2023, and I can’t wait to build on these successes with you in the new year."
